Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey praised the platform he founded, now known as X, as “freedom technology” on Saturday, shortly after revealing he was no longer serving on the board of directors for Bluesky.

Dorsey confirmed that he had left Bluesky — a decentralized microblogging site created through an initiative he launched while at Twitter in 2019 — in a Saturday morning post on X.

“Don’t depend on corporations to grant you rights,” he said in another post several hours later. “Defend them yourself using freedom technology. (you’re on one).”

Bluesky acknowledged Dorsey’s departure from the board in a post on its site Sunday.

“We sincerely thank Jack for his help funding and initiating the bluesky project,” it said. “Today, Bluesky is thriving as an open source social network running on atproto, the decentralized protocol we have built.”

“With Jack’s departure, we are searching for a new board member for the Bluesky public benefit company who shares our commitment to building a social network that puts people in control of their experience. More to come!” the company added.

In the wake of Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter in October 2022, Bluesky was one of several platforms considered a potential alternative to the platform, as some users worried about Musk’s plans for Twitter.

Bluesky was released as an invite-only app for iOS and Android users in February and April 2023, respectively. This February, the platform opened to all users.
