Two Pratt Graduate Programs Moving to Brooklyn Navy Yard

Two of Pratt Institute’s graduate programs are decamping from the Pfizer building in Bedford-Stuyvesant for a bayside view and expanded facilities at the Brooklyn Navy Yard later this year. Pratt’s Photography and Fine Arts MFA programs are slated to take over the entire third floor of the Dock 72 building by August 2024, nestling itself in the center of the borough’s historic and contemporary fabrication headquarters.

At more than 60,000 square feet, nearly double the square footage of the Pfizer building space it has occupied since 2016, the new Dock 72 facilities include 100 individual artist studios, critique and seminar spaces, galleries, fabrication shops, a computer lab, and a dedicated black-box area for performance work and projections. The graduate programs are joining several existing businesses, including culinary community and marketplace Food52, a marketing and design firm called Huge, and the co-working company WeWork, which managed to remain in the building since 2019 despite its financial issues.

With its industrial manufacturing history, Brooklyn Navy Yard is home to dozens of fabrication, studio art, design, and creative technology studios and businesses, situating Pratt’s MFA candidates in closer proximity to the collaborative industries for which the area is known.

MFA Fine Arts chairperson Jane South told Hyperallergic that with the upcoming move, the program is “not only in a position to actively participate in the cultural conversation but to impact how it evolves.”

Graduate Photography chairperson Shannon Ebner noted that the shift to Dock 72 will help further unite Pratt’s learning environment across the borough, highlighting the school’s existing Research Yard which opened in 2022 at Building 3 in Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The move should be completed before the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.
