Promotion: Portuguese company Viriato has set out its commitment to support sustainable materials and energy-efficient production methods for furniture used in hotels and other hospitality settings.
The company, which was established in 1952, specialises in fixtures, fittings and equipment for hotels.
The role of the furniture industry in the decline of environmental health has become apparent in recent years, and Viriato said it is adopting sustainably-focused practices in order to avoid contributing to this decline.
Wood is the primary material used in the production of the company’s furniture, selected for its natural, renewable, biodegradable, reusable and recyclable properties.
It sources its wood from closely managed, sustainable forests, with 89 per cent of it purchased in Portugal.
Viriato operates a circular production cycle, which is facilitated in part by advancements in sustainably-sound manufacturing techniques.
Water-based adhesives are becoming more prevalent than formerly popular solvent-based adhesives.
Another example of the environmentally-conscious production methods adopted by the brand is the concept of lean production, which prioritises the minimisation of waste byproducts and the optimisation of resource use.
These ensure that the furnishings and fittings used are not only aesthetically timeless but also long-lasting and durable.
Viriato decided to eschew a product catalogue, instead making all the pieces bespoke, adapting to the parameters of the specific project.
This creates opportunities for repurposing or upcycling discarded materials, which in turn reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill as well as limits the need to use virgin resources.
“In the hospitality sector, upcycled furniture not only supports sustainability but also adds unique design elements to spaces,” said Viriato.
Viriato outlined a changing outlook for its hospitality clients. As well as concerns for the planet becoming a bigger factor for hotel brands when fitting out spaces, there are increasingly regulatory parameters for hotels to consider when furnishing their interiors.
Viriato said its products are aimed to help managers, buyers and designers ensure that their projects fulfil these.
“In today’s market, hospitality businesses that emphasise sustainability in furniture production can strengthen their brand image and attract environmentally conscious customers,” the company said.
“This approach not only fosters brand loyalty but also aligns with broader corporate social responsibility goals.”
Sustainability now informs all stages of the company’s processes, the company said.
“Viriato’s commitment to sustainability spans its entire value chain – the company focuses on innovative manufacturing processes, upcycling and recycling initiatives, and designing durable, long-lasting products,” it continued.
“By adopting these practices, Viriato aims to achieve a zero-impact footprint.”
